The Daddy

My first memory of being aware of Zach Young was in 8th grade.  My friend Heidi had a crush on him, probably one of those junior high crushes that last about 48 hours.  Heidi and Zach were both in band and had been on a field trip together where they had posed for some photos in a photo booth. She showed me and some other girls the pictures. When I recounted this to him recently he said, "And what did you think?"  I told him honestly that I didn't really have an opinion of him either way.  He said, "Isn't that weird that you were looking at your husband?"  It really is amazing when I think about it.  How this little insignificant strip of black and white photos, viewed quickly and indifferently while between junior high classes, actually held my entire future.

And now I am having a baby with that band geek. Similar to my junior high self, this baby girl doesn't even know how great he is yet.  She doesn't know how much he's going to make her laugh, she doesn't know how he is going to fall completely in love with her and how that is the best feeling in the world, she doesn't know how lucky she is to be his daughter.  I can't wait to tell her.

Here he is playing our junior high fight song with my little sister's trombone after the baby shower.  He has still got it.
