Budget Shopping

couch, originally uploaded by erigutt.

When Zach and I move I'd like to buy all new furniture and get rid of everything I currently have in my apartment. I told this to Zach and he laughed in my face, but he did agree that we should get a new couch and then slowly replace the rest of my hand-me-down stuff as our budget permits.

I've been shopping around this morning and guess what? Only billionaires are allowed to buy furniture. Basically you have to be Hannah Montana to afford a sectional couch.

But I did find this little number at Wal Mart and I surprisingly like it a lot, it also has a matching love seat for $399.

Does anyone know of any other budget friendly furniture resources?

(And don't say Craigslist because I checked and everything looked like it smelled like smoke and/or carried an adobe theme.)

Those "hand me downs" you want to throw out like spoiled milk are NOT that bad.

Ikea, Deseret Industries, Ashley Furniture.

You know, as much as I hate stepping into the sliding doors of Walmart, their prices keep me shopping there every week. And I like that couch!

No suggestions on where to buy furniture, since I, like you, am getting the last usage of all the old family hand-me-downs.

And you might have the most entertaining blog I've been to!

K, Amelia beat me to it...I just heard about that place...and I hear everything is priced just barely above cost....

On the other hand, I wouldn't recommend the Roomstore. We love our couches, but it took seven freaking months for them to get here. Shawn Marion is full of crap.

I LOVE that couch. I have no idea when it comes to furniture, but I bet IKEA has cute stuff.

Amelia is right, they have good sales sometimes too. I think it's called the Potato Barn. The Crowded House (the owner of Potato Barn's X-Wife) on McKellips and Gilbert can have good deals too.

do you guys have 'weekends only'? we have them in St Louis & they're super cheap. also, value city furniture is slighly welfare but on occasion has super great stuff & is dirt cheap.

Ok you have no idea who I am but I just came across your blog through a friends blog. There is a Big Lots on like crismon/main??? I think...next to the harbor freight tools...i think it's in Bashas parking lot...and they have comfy couches for cheap. My friend got some dark brown micro fiber (i think thats what it's called) ones there and they are so comfy. K I feel like an idiot posting this cause I don't know you but I'm all about good deals!

I like the wal-mart couch, cute. We got most of our furniture at an auction, they have them every wednesday night and you can't beat the prices. I got my leather sectional, and my bedroom set there.

You don't know me but I came across your blog from a friends. I feel a little weird posting on your blog for that reason. I don't know if you have downeast outfitters in Arizona, but they usually have great deals on furniture. My friend was able to buy a new sectional for under $300.

Try Octopus Garden for CUTE furniture & pretty decent prices. On Higley-between Brown & McKellips. A friend of mine from highschool owns it.

Erica, I hate to be the bearer of bad news/confirm your previous assumptions, but sometimes you get what you pay for with furniture and so if you don't pay a lot, there is the possibility that it is going to be kind of sucky. Also some of the cheap places have lots of UGLY stuff, and only lottery winners find adorable things for ridiculously cheap. Ikea might be your best bet, however, you will definitely have to put it together yourself. Being grown up and responsible and making large purchases kind of sucks.

We bought IKEA couches because (a) they are affordable and (b) they have removeable, washable covers in like 10 colors/patterns (so when I get antsy for a new look, I change the covers on my couches AND my throw pillows, adn voila!). The couches we bought had metal legs and we aren't quite THAT contemporary, so my husband screwed on some wooden legs made from 4x4s. We refuse to get "real furniture" until the kids stop barfing/peeing/spilling on it. Good luck with all that. I'll bet you can buy that set at Walmart EASILY with your wedding booty!

We bought our couch and bedroom set from Pruitt's. I think its in Phoenix. They have a HUGE selection and its like the same prices as Big Lots and Walmart. We bought our couch for $400, loveseat for $350 and chair for $200.

I bought a couch from walmart once -- don't do it! It may seem cheap -- but you definitely get what you pay for!

As tempting as Wal-Marts low prices can be, DO NOT DO IT!

Memorial Day Weekend is just about 2 months away. It is traditionaly a big time for furniture sales. Find what you want, use the time to save up a little more, than wait for a sale.

Like a previous post said, (and I know you think, JC Penney...kind of lame-cause I do too) but the web has a variety of choices, and they are lots better prices than the store.

ANOTHER IDEA: Find what you want, and use it as the "group Gift" for your shower! My niece did this with a sofa from Crate & Barrel, she got a HUGE chunk of it taken care of and only had to pay a small portion for the rest. That way you can get what you truly want without safrificing quality.

Just thought of something else...If you do the group gift idea, post a link.

I'm sure some may think it's a little tackey, but who cares!

I'll TOTALLY contribute! (Seriously, I will) I don't know you, and it may be a little weird & stalker-er-ish, but hey, in the end you have a couch.

Um remember how I got my couches at Big Lots? Not that they're amazingly cute or comfortable, but they will do for now.

JCPenney outlet store... I bought my furniture at the home store and found it for half the price 6 months later at the outlet!
